Photona 2018

As senior year starts, the fourth year designers discuss a project known throughout the school as Photona.

We are tasked with coming up with a theme for a light show. This show is similar to our music project (as seen below). Photona 2018 yielded the theme The Four Elements. From there, the class is tasked with reaching out to industry professionals and UNCSA alumni to accumulate our ideal gear for the show. This year we discussed In length the relationship between lighting fixtures and light emitted from LED panels. We discussed how visual flow and selective visibility can thematically be embedded in a composition that can be used extensively for each element. The key to the success of this project was communication and compromising. Having four designers on a project yields many directions for every element of the show. It takes constant communication in order to continuously move forward in the process. In addition to just designing, the forth year class has to schedule programming classes for the underclassman. These classes give the underclassman a unique ability to spend time learning some of the industries most prominent pieces of software. With a major weather setback, each team had much less time than expected and continuously solved problems that arose. The event gives the forth year designers a unique experience then, to show their work to these industry professionals. Enjoy!

Music Project

Second Year at University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Lighting majors are required to do a music project. The criteria is: Pick a song that is between 3-4 Minutes and tell a story. Students must; design scenery and lighting,  focus the plot, program the piece and run the piece on their own. The Project tested my ability to make decisions, manage a project over a long period of time, look at relationships of color, and the movement of light with how it effects the eye.

Emerging Choreographers

This was a class project that Lighting Design Students attending University of North Carolina School of the Arts must participate in. Throughout first semester of our third year, students work closely with forth year dance majors to create a dance piece. The semester involved communication exercises, conversations about vocabulary and team building, conversations involving story telling and of course, the tech process. The Lighting Design class collectively has to design a light plot that works for every piece, carefully choosing tools that will be most effective across the board. Ontop of that the designers are responsible for Load-In, Hang, Focus, and Strike while working on our other production assignments.
